Encouraging Autonomy in Your Students
Wednesday, August 04, 2021, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM CDT
Category: Events

Move over helicopter parents. There is a new level of over-parenting that’s hovering over today’s college students—drone parents. These parents use technology to work behind the scenes and monitor their kids. Colleges, and specifically financial aid administrators, can create a culture of autonomy to help students become more resilient and independent. In this session, we will offer guidance on finding a balance between respecting a parent’s need to be involved and supporting a student’s right to grow up and provide examples of what other schools are doing to address these parenting challenges before they occur.

Specific topics covered:

  • Characteristics of helicopter parenting vs. drone parenting
  • Strategies to help parents "let go"
  • Case studies for discussion
